Trump's tragic tariffs on the American Firework Industry.

The Trump administration's tariffs on Chinese imports, as of 9th April 2025, have now increased to a eye watering 104%!

This will have a huge impact on the American fireworks industry. Fireworks, a staple of Fourth of July celebrations, are predominantly sourced from China, with approximately 90% of consumer fireworks imported from there. The most recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese imports have escalated significantly. As of today, a staggering 104% tariff is being applied to all goods imported from China. This includes an additional 50% levy introduced after China announced retaliatory tariffs of 34% on U.S. goods. The tariffs are part of a broader trade war, with both nations exchanging economic blows.

The White House has described these measures as "reciprocal tariffs," aimed at addressing trade imbalances and alleged unfair practices by China. However, the Chinese government has strongly opposed these actions, labeling them as "economic bullying" and vowing to "fight to the end".

The impact of these tariffs is expected to ripple through global markets, with increased costs for U.S. consumers

The fireworks industry in the United States is largely composed of small businesses and non-profit organizations that rely on affordable imports to sustain their operations.

Manufacturing fireworks domestically is not a viable alternative due to the specialized nature of production, which involves handmade processes and materials that are difficult to source and handle safely in the U.S. regulatory environment. As a result, the industry is heavily dependent on imports, making it particularly vulnerable to trade policies that increase costs.

Firework facts from the American fireworks industry.

  • The consumer fireworks industry has an estimated economic impact of approximately $900 million a year
  • Firework shows provide considerable economic benefits to their communities. Consider the following for example:
The Big Bay Boom show in San Diego generates upwards of $6 million in sales for local businesses; over $4.2 million for the local economy with an overall economic impact of $10.6 million.
In 2014, The Red White and Boom show in Columbus, Ohio had an economic impact of over $11 million and has brought an additional $175 million in revenue to restaurants and other local businesses over the last 20 years.
  • The American family will spend, on average, between $20-$30 on fireworks for the Fourth of July.
     A 15-minute backyard fireworks display will cost between $500 - $1,000.

I cant imagine how this is going to impact the fireworks businesses in America. It will make a very small seasonal window of business extremely difficult and challenging and almost impossible for smaller firms to survive.

We wait and see what happens and how the ripples might affect the rest of the global firework markets.
